Salmon Stories

After reading John Wall’s Natural California blog posting on Kokanee Salmon and bears at Lake Tahoe last week,  I got interested in learning more about Kokanee Salmon.  Than this week I read an article on Sockeye Salmon at the Outdoor Photographer blog by Jon Cornforth.  As salmon is my favorite fish and they seem to keep appearing, I decided they deserve a blog entry.

Kokanee is a Native America word and means “red fish”.  The salmon at Lake Tahoe are not native.  They are the result of an accidental overflow from a fish hatchery.  The Kohanee did well in Lake Tahoe and it was decided to do annual plantings.  Kohanee salmon are a land-locked form of salmon and live their whole lives in fresh Water.  This past Oct.2 and 3 there was a Kokanee Salmon Festival.
