Blake Garden isn’t really a secret. It is just that very few people know it exists. It is a public garden that is owned by the University of California-Berkeley. It does double duty as a place for study and research for Landscape Architecture and Environmental Design and is the official home of the President of the University (although he often doesn’t live there). It is one of my favorite places to photograph. It is a Mediterranean Garden and has a variety of habitats. Very few people go there making it very peaceful. This morning it was only me and the gardeners. There were also quite a few birds, but the only ones I could name were California Towhee, American Robin, Dark-eyed Junco, a hummingbird that most likely was an Anna’s, and Spotted Towhee. A special treat today was finding a damselfly or dragonfly that was still sleeping and hadn’t warmed up yet, which allowed a great photographic opportunity. If anyone can identify it in the photos below, please let me know.
Blake Garden is located in Kensington, CA about 4 miles from UC Berkeley. It is only open weekdays and is closed on University holidays. There are also views of the San Francisco Bay although it was hazy today. For more information and directions the website is: http://laep.ced.berkeley.edu/blakegarden/?page_id=2

[…] Today I went up to Blake Garden in Kensington, CA . It the official (but not lived in ) home of the UC President. It was a bright overcast day and the light was ideal for flower photography, however the breeze was less cooperative. If you are looking for a place to visit and see or photograph flowers with few visitors check out this garden. It is only open Monday to Friday and closed weekends.
