Land Acquisition in Ecuador Helps Protect Rare Parakeet

A good holiday present to the birds of Ecuador

The American Bird Conservancy reported on the 318 acre addition to the Buenaventura Reserve in Ecuador.  The addition will help protect the endangered El Oro Parkakeet, whose population in the wild is about 1000. The reserve includes at least 15 threatened species and is the single most important site for the El Oro Parakeet and Ecuadorian Tapaculo. The reserve is also home to the endangered Gray-backed Hawk and the threatened Rufous-headed Chachalaca, Long-wattled Umbrellabird, Red-masked Parakeet, and Pacific Royal Flycatcher.  The reserve is also the site of Puma, Ocelot, Howler Monkey and Sloths and endemic and threatened plants. The reserve is the richest ornithological site in Ecuador.
