The mountains of southern California rise above the surrounding desert, like islands in the ocean. Unique species found nowhere else on Earth have evolved and flourished on these “sky islands,” but how will these isolated plants and animals adapt to a rapidly changing climate? Colin Barrows, the Conservation Coordinator at the Friends of the Desert Mountains, Santa Rosa/San Jacinto Mountains National Monument, explains.
