The 2018 World Shorebirds Day Registration Opens

Registration is now open for the Global Shorebird Counting and now you can add your registered site(s) to the project map. The counts will be carried out between 5–11 September 2018.

Some 50% of the world’s shorebird species are in decline, and vital habitat is being lost at a higher rate than ever. We urgently need to raise public awareness around the world of these imperiled birds’ plight and the need for shorebird conservation and research.

Healthy populations of shorebirds depend on healthy wetlands—and so do thousands of human lives around the world. Action on a global scale is need to help connect people and shorebirds.

We created World Shorebirds Day with the following aims:

  1. To raise awareness of the need to protect shorebirds and their habitats throughout their life cycles;
  2. To raise public awareness of the need for continued shorebird research, monitoring, and conservation;
  3. To connect people with shorebirds through wetland sites around the world;

Background

Gyorgy Szimuly is a Hungarian birder and conservationist. For the past 35 years, he has concentrated on global shorebird conservation, bird monitoring, wetlands restoration, and shorebird population ecology.

Convinced that the world’s shorebirds deserved a day of celebration, he created World Shorebirds Day, observed every year in early September in conjunction with a Global Shorebird Count.

Everyone is welcome to join the World Shorebirds Day Group here to discuss these events and contribute your ideas.
