Northern Arizona –Peridot Mesa is well past it’s prime but still has quite a covering of poppies. Lot more lupine than there was a few weeks ago.

Southern Arizona– This spring is not a super wildflower season so far. You have to snoop around the places known for great flowers in previous years. This morning we found twenty different plants in bloom along the unmarked Alamo Canyon trail in Catalina State Park. Weather in Tucson has been exceptionally warm for late February and March, without any recent rain, so flowering is advanced but not abundant. For Alamo Canyon, park in Romero Ruins parking lot, then cross the road and keep slightly to the right after you cross the wash and head gradually upward toward the mountains. It’s roughly one hour each way to the tiny pools at the far end of the attractive hike, with most of the flowering in the first third of the distance. Early in the day is always best, with hat, water, sunscreen, and sturdy shoes, in addition to your desert wildflower guide and camera with closeup lens.
