Jays Weigh Peanuts To Select Best

ScienceDaily reports

Mexican Jays (Aphelocoma wollweberi) distinguish between heavier and lighter peanuts without opening the nuts. The birds do it by shaking the nuts in their beaks, which allows them to ‘feel’ nut heaviness and to listen to sounds produced by peanuts during handling.

    I have a blue jay that sits out side the window and calls to me to bring the peanuts out when I put them in the tray he dose the same thing until he finds the right one… its so funny to watch..especially when two are almost the same he goes back and forth till he decides that the right one.
