The LA Times reported that researches confirm that Ashy Storm-petrels are breeding on Catalina Island. Researchers believe there may up to 50 nests on the Catalina Island. There are only about 10,000 Ashy Storm-petrels in the world and they are listed as a California Bird Species of Special Concern. Their low population numbers and restricted range make them susceptible to chemical pollutants, oil spills and predation from ravens, rats and feral cats.
