Dams often result in damage to habitat and wildlife. The New York Times recently had an article calling for removing dams that are no longer serving any useful purpose. Interesting facts from the article:
- the federal government lists more than 80,000 dams
- more than 26,000 pose high or significant safety hazards
- all dams have limited life spans
- only about 1,750 produce hydropower, according to the National Hydropower Association.
