ScienceDaily has an article on new research in the plumage patterns of male and female birds. The study traced evolutionary pathways in the dimorphism of 288 species of waterfowl and gamebirds. It was found that plumage patterns in females are not a result of genetic correlation. Both male and female birds have the capacity to change between different types of plumage patterns. Changing plumage may be driven by an environmental basis or as a signalling function between birds of different sexes or within the same sex.
