How California’s Drought Threatens Species Existence

The Sacramento Bee has an article on the impact of drought on at risk species and how more species may be put at risk. At risk are tricolored blackbirds, large trees and native fish.  Some species are  on the state’s endangered list and scientists believe others are probably headed there as their number rapidly decline. The article mentions:

  • 7 species of fish on the endangered species list in California – and there is every sign that number will increase… Eighty percent of those species face extinction by the year 2100 if present trends continue
  • 47 animal species on its endangered list, another 36 listed as “threatened,” plus six that are candidates for inclusion on one of the lists, according to the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.
