The Marin Independent Journal reported that river otters are returning to the Bay Area after years of being relatively absent. Although the reason for the population increase is not known, possibilities are a 1962 ban on otter trapping; a 1972 federal law to reduce pollution in rivers, creeks, and bays; and a series of creek cleanup and environmental restoration projects.
