Caltrans To Remove Bird Killing Nets

The Press Democrat reports that Caltrans is finally taking action to protect birds during highway construction in Petaluma. Caltrans had installed netting under the Petaluma bridge to keep migratory cliff swallows ( a federally protected species) from nesting during the construction. Birds were caught in the nets and died during the nesting season.

New actions are being taken to decrease the harm to the cliff swallows including removal of the nets, installation of plastic sheeting to deter birds and removing nests that birds start to build in the construction zone. Birds will be allowed to nest on complete parts of the bridge and demolition work will be done outside of the nesting season.
