Fungus Foray & Wild Mushroom Expo December 21 & 22

Yuba Watershed Institute Fungus Foray & Wild Mushroom Expo – December 21st & 22nd.

Fungus Foray: Saturday at the North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center – San Juan Ridge (20 miles north of Nevada City), 9:00am – 4:00pm (registration @ 8:30)
Foray Admission: $20 general, $18 for YWI members; half-day – $12, Under 18 Free

Saturday Afternoon Schedule:

  • 2-2:30 Mushrooms, Toadstools, and Beyond – Else Vellinga
  • 2:30-3 Introduction to Microscopy, why do I need to use a Microscope?- Alan Rockefeller
  • 3-3:30 Lactarius of California – Noah Siegel
  • 3:30-4 Best of show, what we picked – Else, Noah, Daniel

Wild Mushroom Expo: Sunday at the Miner’s Foundry, Nevada City 11:00am – 4:00pm Expo Admission: $10 general, $8 for YWI members, $5 for Students, Under 13 Free

  • 11:00 How A Mushroom Gets It’s Name – Else Vellinga
  • 12:00 Under Pressure; Evolution Oddities in the Fungal World – Noah Siegel
  • 1:00 Mushroom Dye Demonstration – Alissa Allen
  • 2:00 Mushroom as A Utility: Making and Carrying Fire – Matt Berry
  • 2:30 Mushrooms As Medicine – TBD
  • 3:00 Psilocybe of Mexico – Alan Rockefeller

The Foray is not only a wonderful way to spend a day out in the woods with friends – the mushrooms collected are actually classified, documented, and the data shared with interested scientific bodies and agencies. Last year alone, 225 species were collected and identified.

The Expo follows up the Foray with mushroom displays and a full day of lectures and classes about these amazing and varied fungi. There will even be a mushroom dyeing demonstration! All things mushroom will be featured, from soup to shirts to books and art. Stay tuned as we gather together the area’s top mycologists for this fun, fabulous, fascinating weekend!
