Hot Summer Big Boon To UK Butterflies

The BBC reported that UK Butterfly numbers were way up after last year due to the hot summer in the UK. In the annual count of 21 common butterflies this past summer fifteen species had increased. Twelve species increased by over 50% and only four species decreased. The big winners were Small Tortoiseshells up 388% and Peacocks up 3500% compared to last year.

Although this year’s numbers are very good, UK butterflies are in an overall decline due to habitat loss. To stop the overall decline will require correcting the damage done to wild habitats.
