The BBC reported that the puffin population on the Farne Islands, off the coast of Northumberland, had an 8% population since the last count in 2008. This is in spite of thousands having died from severe winter storms. The population increase is attributed to making their nesting habitat secure and a good food supply.
The most recent census reports there are now slightly less than 40,000 pairs of nesting puffins across the eight National Trust-owned islands. This remains lower than the 55,674 living on the islands in 2003. Read full story at: BBC News – Puffin census on Farne Islands shows numbers rising.
