U.S. To Remove Gray Wolves Endangered Status – updated 4/26/13

The plan is to drop protection for Gray Wolves but reinstate it for Mexican Gray Wolves whose number are much fewer. You can read more about this at the Defenders of Wildlife press release Mexican Gray Wolf Set To Be Relisted As Endangered Subspecies

The LA Times reported the US government plans to remove federal endangered species protections from all gray wolves in the lower 48 states except for a small areas in Arizona and New Mexico. This would allow each state to decide on what level of protection, if any, to give the wolves. California, which has had only one known gray wolf, is considering establishing its own protections.
