Audublog recently had an article on the possible development of the Bay of Panama wetlands. The Wetlands area is recognized as a Globally Important Bird Area and a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar convention. In April Federal officials had reversed the protected status and were going to allow development in the Wetlands. However, the Supreme Court of Panama reinstated the protected status noting the importance of conserving and protecting the wetlands. Audublog reports

More than 24 migrant bird species from the U.S. and Canada that are of particular conservation concern depend on these habitats to survive. These include more than 30% of the global population of the Western Sandpiper and 22% of the global population of Whimbrel.
