Birding Eastshore State Park 2/4/13 Updated 2/5/13

Burrowing Owl of Gilman St.

Burrowing Owl of Gilman St.

Update: check out photos from the walk by Bob Stokstad: Bay Trail Photo Gallery, 2013-02-04.

Today we went birding with friends from Golden Gate Audubon classes in the East Shore State Park  between Gilman Street and University Avenue in Berkeley. The Burrowing Owls can still be found near the Soccer Fields just south of Gilman St. in Berkeley. Both owls were very visible in the orange fenced areas.

In addition to the owls, other highlights included watching a female Kingfisher fishing, seeing Western and Clark’s Grebes doing mating behaviors, and being able to identify over 50 birds between us. We didn’t get the Dowitchers to species, there may have been Greater Scaup mixed in with the Lesser, and we would have liked to have gotten better looks to confirm the distant hawk we identified as a Red-tail. To see today’s list go to:  East Shore State Park Bird List 2/4/13
