The LA Times reports that wind farms are considering using detection systems to decrease bird deaths. There are many questions about these systems including effectiveness, ability to differentiate different bird species, and high costs. The Power’s Pine Tree wind farm in southern California is being investigated by the federal government about eight golden eagle carcasses found at the site over the last two years. The outcome of this investigation may be a major influence on wind farms decision to set up detection systems. Avian radar systems are being used in Texas and Europe.
