The Public Employees for Environmental Responsiblity (PEER) reported that  federal court decided the National Park Service does not have to protect the desert tortoise by limiting the sport hunting of “varmits” (non-game animals). The sport hunting of “varmits” is dangerous to tortoises as they have been the victims of  the reckless discharge of firearms. Also hunters have left carcasses which attract ravens, who prey on tortoises.
