The BBC reported that pollution, overfishing, habitat loss and invasive alien species have resulted in major declines in freshwater fish and molluscs. A recent study of over 6000 species for the European Red list reported the following percentages of threatened species:
- 44% molluscs
- 37% freshwater fish
- 23% amphibians
- 19% reptiles
- 15% mammals
- 15% dragonflies
- 13% birds
