I read a story (courtesy of Rusty Scalf) about how California vineyards are encouraging Western Bluebirds. They are building
nesting boxes to attract the Western Bluebirds. In return the eat insects offer a green pest control service for the grape growers. Interestingly the story appeared in a UK newspaper. Read a detailed story about Western Bluebird nesting habits and their use in the vineyards in the UK Guardian: Bird-friendly California vineyards may have fewer pests.
