The Marshall Islands government has created a shark sanctuary of almost 750,000 sq miles. It includes a ban on commercial shark fishing, any trade in shark products, and certain types of fishing gear. If a shark is caught accidentally it must be released alive. Violators may be fined up to over $300,000.
This increases the total area of ocean in which sharks are protected from about 1.0 to 1.8 million sq miles. One third of ocean sharks are on the Red List of Threatened Species.
