Birding Bodega Bay

Today I was at Bodega Bay birding with the shorebird class.  The highlight of the day was seeing a Peregrine Falcon hunting and chasing shorebirds.  The surprise of the day was to see a Turkey Vulture harassing the Peregrine Falcon.   The birds seen in largest numbers were Marbled Godwit, Willet, Dunlin, Sanderling, Western Gull, Black Turnstone, Double-crested Cormorant and Black-bellied Plover.  To see the instructor, Bob Lewis’s  list for today got to: http://www.wingbeats.org/classes/lists/11Fall_Shorebird.htm  Bob’s List includes 40 species, 12 of which are shorebirds. I also saw several native plants still in bloom, a Monarch Butterfly and a Western Spotted Cucumber Beetle. Native plants included Yellow Bush Lupine, California Poppy, Lizard Tail, Gum Plant, Yarrow, Coyote Bush, Seaside Daisy, Yellow Monkeyflowers, and Cow Parsnip.

After a hard day of birding we went to lunch at the Sandpiper Restaurant next to the Pelican Plaza. Where else would a birder eat?

Here are some photos from today.
