Based on new predictive techniques the current estimate is that we have 8.7 million species on earth. The study suggests that 86% of land species and 91% of marine species have yet to be discovered. Previous estimates had been between 3 and 100 million species on the planet. The study was conducted by researchers from the Census of Marine Life. It consisted of a ten-year project involving 2,700 scientists from more than 80 countries.
