Osprey Returning to Illinois

After A Long Absence Osprey Are Back In Illinois

Sixty years ago Osprey disappeared in Illinois. Environmental pollution and DDT, which thinned eggshells, were the likely culprits. Without big trees, Osprey lacked safe nesting area.  Through the introduction of nesting platforms and banning of DDT it is estimated that there are now twenty-seven Osprey ,eight nesting pairs and two more are trying in Cook county. Last year seven Osprey chicks were counted.
