Audublog has a recent story about the sharp decline in the Tricolored Blackbird. A 2011 survey revealed that population in California had declined to 259,000 from 395,000 in 2008. In 1930 the population was about 3 million. The tricolored blackbird is found mainly in California with most of the population in the San Joaquin Valley. Factors contributing to the population decline are drought and farm fields where the birds nest being harvested before the young birds fledge.
