California has almost 2000 species of native bees and they are more important than ever. As the population of honeybees (who are not native) decline, native bees are able substitutes as pollinators of many plants, including food crops. Unfortunately, native bees are also facing threats to their populations. Also native bees typically don’t travel far for food. Depending on the species they may travel only a few yards to a mile. Thus habitat destruction can quickly impact local populations. There are many things we can do to help native bee populations by what we do and don’t do on our gardens. Go to the links below to learn more and see if there are changes you might want to make in your garden.
