Manitoba, Canada Establishes Large Boreal Preserve

The government of Manitoba Canada announced that the province has established permanent legal protection to almost two million acres

The boreal forests in Manitoba have been threatened by the expansion of  hydroelectric power.  A proposed transmission line through the forests was opposed by the indigenous people of the region for the possible damage it would due to their native lands.  The provincial government has passed the “Asatiwisipe Aki Management Plan“, which will protect the forest and wildlife and serve to help decrease global warming.  The plan was supported by conservation groups in Canada and the U.S.

The plan does allow for some “sustainable community development” which will be supervised by the indigenous residents of the region.  The plan provides for protection and management of woodland caribou, wolves and 30% of North America’s songbirds who visit Canada’s boreal forests annually.
