The Wildflower Capitol of Colorado
Crested Butte is the considered the Wildflower Capitol of Colorado. It is surrounded by the Elk Mountains and the Gunnison National Forest. As the elevation is high, summer is the time to go for wildflowers. In 2008 we spent time in both Crested Butte and the San Juan Mountains. It was a throughly enjoyable time exploring the wildflower back roads and trails of Colorado. There are many dirt roads to explore and a four-wheel drive or all wheel drive vehicle with high clearance will increase your options.
Crested Butte is the site of an annual wildflower festival. This year’s festival is July 11 through 17. Programs include:
- over 80 hikes ranging from easy to technical
- yoga classes among alpine meadows
- 4×4 tours into the alpine backcountry
- garden tours of historic crested butte
- photography classes for all levels
- art & cooking classes
- medicinal classes using botanical ingredients
- gardening with wildflowers
- birding and butterflies
