The New York Times recently reported on seeing rare birds in Hawaii. However, this is not a positive statement about birding in the 50th state. Due to loss of habitat and disease a number of species of disappeared and other populations are very fragile. Hawaii leads the country in birds in birds on the endangered species list with 35 endangered species. Only six of the original species of forest birds still exist; five are extinct and two can be found elsewhere. The article also includes a list of preserves.
