Fall Color Updates for 11/5/10

Updated 11/7/10

Fall Color in California has a report from southern California that reports good color in the southern San Bernardino Mountain area.   Bear Bear Lake and Grey’s Peak are mentioned as especially good spots.

John Poimiroo reports at his California Fall Color blog that highway 299 from Redding to Arcata is “glorious” “The colors to be seen along the route are the best I’ve ever seen and should remain good until at least Sunday, when rain is predicted.” “The best viewing areas are from Whiskeytown Lake NRA west to Weaverville, then again from the Salyer Rest Area west to Berry Summit ”  Check his blog for more details about fall foliage in the northern part of the state.

On the California Nature Photographers forum Tony Siciliano has a report on Yosemite Valley that says many of the oaks and cottonwoods are going directly from green to brown and there is little yellow.  He also reported that Yosemite and Bridalveil Falls have a lot of water.

The Plumas County Fall Color reports peak color in Indian Valley and Hwy 70 west of Cromberg along the middle fork of the Feather River.  For more details on Plumas check the site.

The Sacramento Bee‘s last of the season fall foliage report: Best Bets for fall leaf color, Nov.5-7 reports Antelope Valley, June Lake Loop,  and Bishop as best bets for this weekend.

Color should be increasing in Napa Valley Vineyards but I have not seen any reports.

If anyone, can add information please send a comment and I will add it to the post.

You’ve reminded us that not all fall color is in the leaves! Those beautiful stems, fruits contrast
beautifully with the (mostly)non native colorful leaves., and greens of the lichen.
A few weeks ago there was an outstanding talk at the garden about the importance of fall color in Japanese nature, literature, and design. The celebration of the leaves -especially the maple- is as important as the cherry blossom festivals. We saw slides of solitary expeditions and big family celebrations of the fall color!
