3000 Oak Trees or 1000 Homes, Hotels and a Shopping Center

Franklin Canyon Saved; A Win for Open Space

The Muir Heritage Land Trust raised 3.3 million  dollars to buy Franklin Canyon. This saved the Franklin Canyon open space near Hercules from a development that would have removed over 3000 oak trees and consisted of over 1000 homes, hotels and a shopping center.  Funds came a from a variety of sources including the East Bay Regional Park District, Caltrans, individuals, private foundations and the city of Hercules. The Muir Heritage Land Trust has preserved over 2500 acres of natural area in Contra Costa County.  Trails are being built and the space should be open by next spring.
