This past winter Fremontia, the journal of the California Native Plants, society had a great article on on this area. It was called “The Last Floral Blooms: Something To See, While They Are Still There” and was written by Richard Dickey who has visited and photographed this area for twenty-three years.
The article is available on line at: http://www.cnps.org/cnps/publications/fremontia/index.php It is in the most recent issue listed: volume 37, No. 1- Winter 2009
Richard Dickey also has a website Feral Flowers that has many excellent wildflower landscape photos of this area as well as additional information about desert wildflower blooms: http://www.feralflowers.com/front.html
When there is a good bloom, he reports that it usually occurs between mid March and mid April. Follow-up dates for this year at DesertUSA, California Wildflower Hotsheet and Natural History Wanderings.
If you read the Fremontia article you know that the Tejon Ranch has been under threat from developers. I just learned that today the San Francisco Chronicle had a story on the fight against development and the threat to the California condor. Link to story below:

The photos taken by Richard Dickey are breath taking….I’ve seen sheets of wildflowers many times, but never able to capture the colors….Thanks for his link and for all your work.
