San Mateo county now owns the 140 acre Pillar Point Bluff. The Peninsula Open Space trust had acquired the land from 2004 to 2008 in pieces, fixed some erosion problems and restored a three-mile trail that ran along the top of the bluff. It recently sold the property to San Mateo County. It is open to the public and offers some excellent views of the coast. From the bluff you can see harbor seals, rabbits, auks, red-tailed hawks and with binoculars the Mavericks surf break. The county had already been managing the area for a few years so the transition should be seamless.
