The journal Nature has an article explaining why birds fly in a V formation. It has been theorized for years that birds flew in a V formation as it was energy efficient, but had been difficult to prove. A recent study confirms this for the first time. The study found that birds were able to coordinate their wing flaps with much more finesse than believed possible to maximize the effectiveness of flying in a V formation.
