Sharks and Rays Face Extinction Risk

ScienceDaily reported on a study that one-quarter of the world’s cartilaginous fish, namely sharks and rays, face extinction within the next few decades. The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Shark Specialist Group (SSG) conducted the study and is asking governments to safeguard sharks, rays and chimaeras (informally as ghost sharks, ratfish, spookfish, or rabbitfishes ) by prohibiting catching the most threatened species, science-based fisheries quotas, protection of key habitats and improved enforcement.
