I am on a short visit to Palm Beach County Florida and did a bird walk yesterday at Green Cay Wetlands. I originally had gone to Wakodahatchee Wetlands, but the parking lot was full and people were waiting to get in. I decided to skip the crowds and headed over the nearby Green Cay, which was much more peaceful and still had plenty of interesting birds.
Green Cay has a good number of herons, ibis, Anhingas, coots, blackbirds, and Common Gallinules. It was also nice to see Palm Warblers and Blue-winged Teal in their native area. I also got to see a Sora. In total I identified 20 different birds. The most difficult ID’s were a female Red-wing Blackbird and immature Common Gallinule; fortunately I had photos of both that I could study afterwards. Here is today’s list: Green Cay Wetlands Bird List 1/17/14.
I have also seen a number of other locals birds driving around including Kingfisher, Northern Mockingbird, Pelican (only seen in profile), a Red=bellied Woodpecker (a new one for me) and doves. I will post some photos in a few days.
