NPR wrote about a scientist who is working to save Polar Bears through on public relations and education. He believes emphasizing public relations was the best change to get people to recognize the serious threat greenhouse gas emissions pose to Polar Bear Survival.
Biologist Steve Amstrup’ gave up being chief scientist with the conservation group Polar Bears International, a job he really enjoyed when he realized that by the middle of this century, two-thirds of the world’s polar bears could be gone. The sea ice on which the Polar Bears live is shrinking as a result of climate change. Saving the bears could not be done by traditional government conservation methods such as restricting hunting, banning pesticides or creating reserves. It can only be done by a serious reduction in greenhouse emissions. Recognizing this motivated him to make the career change.
