Bay Nature has an article about the Little Hoover Commission report to evaluate the effectiveness of state programs that had recommendations to support the survival of California state parks in the midst of the budget crisis. It suggested turning the control of “locally serving” state parks to local agencies such as nonprofits, cities and counties. Local control is in part an outgrowth of the large amount of local support generated to keep local state parks open when their was the recent fear they might close.
The state would not give up control well-known, popular and “iconic” parks such as redwoods, deserts or state beaches. This proposal is supported by groups such as the California State Parks Foundation.
