Knowland Park Saved; Measure A1 Defeated

Knowland Park was saved (at least for now) as measure A1 was defeated. The attempt by the Oakland Zoo that would have spent $100 million tax dollars and destroyed native habitat that was the home of rare native species of plants and animals lost. The measure received only 62% of the vote and it needed a two-thirds vote to pass as it was a tax.

The defeat was pretty impressive as the zoo had full-time staff and spent about one million dollars on the campaign. The Save Knowland Park group spent about $20,00 and depended exclusively on volunteers.

However, this may not be the end of the battle. There may still be future attempts by the zoo to take over parts of Knowland Park.
