Are Biodiversity And Language Losses Related?

The BBC News reported on a study that suggested there is a relationship between the loss of biodiversity and a decline in linguistic and cultural diversity. The study found that 70 percent of the world’s languages were in “biodiversity hotspots”. They also found that as environmental areas were degraded over time that there was a correlating decline in culture and language. The researchers stated

“Biologists estimate annual loss of species at 1,000 times or more greater than historic rates, and linguists predict that 50-90% of the worlds languages will disappear by the end of the century,”
