The San Francisco Chronicle reported a study by Point Reyes Bird Observatory describing serious threats to bay wetlands from climate change. It stated global warming could raise the water level of S.F. Bay and destroy habitat vital to thousands of birds and other animals. The study said under a worse case scenario 93% of the Bay’s tidal wetlands could be submerged by a 5.4 foot rise in the ocean. These numbers are based on worse case situation over the next 50 to 100 years. Under a best case scenario sea level would only go up 1.6 feet in the next century and marshes could actually increase. However, the best case scenario is considered very unlikely. Read more in the SF Chronicle: Climate change: Sea rise could kill vital marshes.
