The Leonids will peak late night November 17 to early the next morning. The meteor shower is created by the earth passing through dust stream of the Comet 55P Tempel-Tuttle. The meteors are mainly blue or green and leave dust trains behind them. It is expected to have fewer than 12 meteors per hour this year. The light from the quarter moon near radiant point of the shower in the constellation Leo will decrease visibility.
The Leonids are know for their 33 year peaks which can produce 100’s of meteors per hour. The last peak was 2001.
