Record Year For UK Bittern Population

Bittern at Hatchpond by Ian A Kirk

The Bittern population in England is on the upswing.  It is over 100 for the first time.  This year 104 males were counted which up from 11 15 years ago and none before 1911. 85% were found on nature reserve, mainly in East Anglia.  The Bittern is England’s loudest bird with a very unique call.  It is the loud call that makes it easy to count Bitterns as they normally hid out in the reeds where they blend in like the photo to the right. The American Bittern also has an impressive call. You can here at the Cornell Lab site  Bittern’ Booming Call
