Over 2000 raptors are killed every year at Altamont Pass. The total includes an average of 67 Golden Eagles per year. This creates conflicts between the need to protect the raptors and the desire to develop renewable energy. According to fish and game authorities 440,000 birds are killed by wind farms each year. To date no wind energy producer has been prosecuted by wildlife authorities for creating hazards to birds. Taller turbines are being built that decrease but do not stop bird fatalities.
