Southern California Wildflower Report 5/27/11

Thodore Payne has posted its last wildflower report of the year.  Some of the highlights are:

  • Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve has California buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum), Chamise (Adenostema fasciculatum), and Bladderpod (Isomeris arborea), Golden Yarrow (Eriophyllum confertiflorum), lavender pink Mariposa Lily (Calochortus splendens)
  • Caspers Wilderness  (The Bell CanyonTrail)  Sticky-leaf monkeyflower (Mimulus aurantiacus), Canchalagua (Zeltnera venusta), Mariposa,Lily (Calochortus splendens), Golden stars (Bloomeria crocea), and Weed’s Mariposa Lily (Calochortus weedii)
  • San Gabriel Mountains  (Placerita Canyon Natural Area and Devil’s Punchbowl Natural Area). Both have great flowering plants.  Flannel Bush (Fremontodendron californicum), Golden Yarrow (Eriophyllum confertiflorum), Scarlet Bugler (Penstemon centranthifolius) and Indian Paintbrush (Castillja sp)
  • Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks.Flowering dogwood (Cornus nuttallii) when entering Giant Forest; along Highway 198 through Three Rivers  California buckeye (Aesculus californica),  Flannel Bush (Fremontodendron californicum)
