California State Parks website reports:

“On 3/16/2011 we experienced a landslide that dropped a 100 ft section of highway 1 into the sea. The slide occured just south of Rocky Creek Bridge at approximately Monterey County mile marker 60.8. The road closure is taking effect from Palo Colorado Road from the north to Bixby Bridge from the south. The damage has yet to be fully assessed but early estimates are the road will remain closed for at least 1 month. This estimate may change. Currently this means that any person that wishes to visit the Big Sur area (Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, Andrew Molera State Park, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, Point Sur Lightstation State Historic Park) will not be able to access the area from the north.  The only ingress to the area is now highway 1 from Cambria. Those coming from the north will need to drive Hwy 101 south, then Hwy 46 west, then highway 1 north. This detour is significant and will increase the drive time by 3 or more hours.”
