Altamont Pass wind turbines will be removed or replaced decreasing threat to birds

LA Times in its Greenspace section reports that thousands of old wind turbines will be replaced by new ones that are less dangerous to birds and produce more power.  2400 Turbines will be replaced in the next 4 years and the remaining ones will be shut down by 2015.    A  California Energy Commission study reported that the 5,400 older turbines operating at Altamont Pass killed an estimated 1,766 to 4,271 birds annually, including 881 to 1330 raptors such as golden eagles and red-tail hawks.  To read more go to Old Altamont Pass turbines to be swapped out by NextEra to save birds, improve efficiency (LA Times) and Brown’s Office Brokers Settlement to Save Birds and Make Altamont Wind Turbines More Efficient (yubanet.com)
